Attendance | Print |

The Detroit Academy of Arts & Sciences requires that all enrolled students not only attend school each and every day but also regularly attend every instructional class period. These expectations are not only in accordance with state and federal laws, but also ensure that each student is present to benefit from the educational programs and course content being provided. A missed school day or instructional class can significantly impact a student's continued growth and knowledge in a particular subject area. It is therefore desirable that academic progress and instruction continue without interruption.

If your child will not be coming to school, you should contact the school office and inform the school personnel of this absence. It is important that the district is made aware of your child's absence to maintain student safety, security and academic progress. You may notify the school by phone; by sending a note upon the student's return; or, in person at the morning drop off. Making this contact will ensure that your child's absence will be recorded as an excused absence rather than as a truancy.

Acceptable reasons for excused absences include:

  1. Observance of a religious holiday
  2. Medical/health related appointments, which cannot be scheduled after school hours
  3. Illness
  4. Death in the family
  5. Unavoidable family emergencies

Parents please note:

  • A written note should accompany all absences when a student returns to school.
  • A physician's note should accompany all absences lasting five days or more.
  • If an absence excuse is not received after a period of three school days, the absence will be recorded in the student's record as unexcused.
  • Students with more than (10) unexcused absences will AUTOMATICALLY be referred to our district's Truant Officer for corrective action.
